This is a guide to help you when constructing a CV. Here are a few tips before you start. ● Keep your CV in a word doc – this is for readability with most ATS systems on the market today. ● Use standard fonts – Times New Roman, Calibri, Arial. ● There is no need for any fancy artwork, formatting, or graphics (unless you’re in UX/UI) ● Always keep a master CV with everything on – this will allow you to tailor your CV to job applications (through copying & pasting) which will help you stand out. ● Make sure your CV mirrors your LinkedIn ● Do not cram everything into 1-2 pages (unless you’re in America) – having a CV for UK/Europe which is 2 – 5 pages is fine. ● Keep your job titles in line with industry standards. ● Keep Job Descriptions for roles you’re successful in getting. These will help with writing your CV/updating in future. Template Name Email/Phone GitHub, GitLab, Stackoverflow links Visa/Settled status (if applicable) Personal Profile This should be no more than 1 – 3 sentences which covers: ● Who you are ● what you do ● Your technical expertise e.g., I am a Junior Web Developer with 1 years’ experience in building engaging front end ecommerce platforms using JavaScript, TypeScript and React. Technical Skills You don’t want this to be a word salad, but you need to put down the skills you’ve used commercially. You can simply bullet point them or categorize them (e.g., Programming, DevOps/Cloud, Frameworks etc.) If you’re active in building personal projects, contributing to open source etc and the tech you’ve used hasn’t been covered, it’s worth noting your skill set in this area too. Experience Jobs to be listed in most recent date first going to your oldest employment. Format for all jobs: Company name Job title (reference main tech stack, e.g., Junior Web Developer (React)) Date MM/YY – MM/YY or Present 1-2 sentences on overview of the business and your role. e.g. Brought on as a Junior Web Developer as part of a Scrum Team consisting of 4 other Web Developers and 1 Senior Web Developer to replatform the ecommerce platform that specialises in data collection for marketeers. Responsibilities (bullet point) ● These should be about the work you are doing as an individual and not as a company. ● Reference the technologies you are using to achieve these tasks ● If you have the job description, this will help give you ideas on what you’ve contributed to. Projects Projects that you have worked on, you will want to highlight here. This includes what the project was, what it was set to achieve and outcome and what you contributed to that project, again including tech used. Tech Stack: You’ll want to list the tech stack you worked with in this role. (Optional, especially if you’ve covered it a lot through your role) Personal Projects Here you want to talk about any work you’ve done in your own time, whether that’s building an application, a website, contributing to open-source projects. You’ll want to cover: ● What you built / contributed to ● Why you did this ● What was the outcome (if any) ● Tech used ● Link Education It is Important to only include Degrees (with grade) and above and technical certifications. Hobbies/Interests.
